*letter to Sergeant Sannen*

Sergeant,

I am sorry that was not able to speak to you as you requested the other day. I would be happy to answer your concern by letter or to arrange a meeting with you if necessary.

Further, an arse of a human male mage was seen coming up the steps of Barak-Tor. I asked him what he was doing, and he replied that it was none of my business. I then informed him that it was indeed my business as I was assigned the important duty to keep the area safe.

This fool then proceeded to insult, threaten, then finally to attack me with offensive magics that burned and caused injury to myself. This is in full view of all in the bazaar, including the vendors. I proceeded to buffet him with my bare fists to prevent him from casting further magics, and he then ceased this action.

// This was PvP that was unsupervised by a DM because no DMs were on, and my character's AI had Rollo start to beat the shit out Dagam's character without me choosing to do so. //

I have also seen a poster where a man matching this description is looking for others to engage in wanton criminal activity including killing. His name is Saher Mumford, and I urge you to have him prosecuted before my Stouthearts act to enforce Dwarven Law if Sanctuary's proves inept once more. That citizens can now openly advertise as criminals looking for help is most disturbing to me.

I also have quite a problem with Sergeant Fawkes' series of statements that have instructed me that it is illegal to even draw a weapon on another person committing a crime.

According to him, as a citizen, it is illegal for me to use physical force to prevent a murder that is in the process of being committed. This is preposterous to any with half a wit, and I urge you to have this matter brought before the Sheriff or even the Council so that Sergeant Fawkes' interpretation of the law might be reviewed.

Congratulations on your promotion lass. It's well earned.

Thane Rollo Stoneshield High Priest of the Stoutheart Clan Faenor of Berronar Truesilver Governor of Barak-Tor

Thane,

In almost all cases, citizens using violence - even to stop a crime - still counts as assault. Depending on the circumstances it may or may not be stand for trialing purposes.

I'll be forwarding you letter to the Sherrif, so you should expect this to be dealt with very soon. As for what I wanted to talk to you about, it was the massacare in the Badlands. Anything you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated.

Saher was arrested and served time for a count of assault, trespassing, and unlawful magical use, two minor crimes and a serious crime.

Sergeant Fawkes

Sergeant Fawkes,

Thank you for your prompt response once again. I am quite impressed with that aspect of your professionalism.

I mentioned to Sergeant Sannen that it strikes me poorly that a citizen of Sanctuary acting in good faith is not legally allowed to protect the victim of a crime. If a man is assaulted and is being hacked to bits in front of the Rock Bottom, it is the height of absurdity to say that it is illegal to stop it from occuring.

But, the law is the law, and I will abide by this. I hope that someday, it is not you that I see being attacked by a raving madman! After your very concise and well-formulated explanation that it is illegal, I would not deign to break the law even if you asked me to do so as your life ebbed away. As the life of each individual is equal, it would be hypocrisy for you to ask me to break the law in your behalf, no?

Is it also illegal to cast spells of healing on one who is being slain? Ah, yes, spell-casting is also prohibited. It is impossible to use mundane medicines in combat, so I will be sure to have an expensive wand of healing at the ready when next I witness future slayings.

Your definition of murder also amuses me, because the outcome is the same whether one planned to kill another or not. Dwarven Law cares not whether the one who commits the act is a crafty fiend or a slobbering fool. Killing another is the crime, and punishment is meted out accordingly.

Sergeant, is his magical assault considered the serious crime? Or his spell-casting itself? Just for clarification mind you.

My thanks Sergeant. I do so enjoy trying to understand the vagaries and beauracracy of human Law. Any consistency is a welcome respite in the sea of bias, corruption and whim of the individual. I believe I do finally see what needs to occur to live within this society and adhere to the Law.

It is perfectly legal to use magic to heal a man being attacked to save his life. You may be required afterwards to prove his life was indeed at risk, and you must be registered with the Spellguard. Essentially, you still will be considered to have broken the law, but would be granted clemency on the grounds you did it to save a life.

If you have more questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Also, the rent is due for Barak-Tor.

Sergeant Fawkes

Sergeant Sannen,

I was attacked and likely slain after being overly persistant in attempting to persuade these poor shield dwarf kin to return to the relative safety of Sanctuary. I would add that I did so unarmored and without weapon, in a gesture of good will that was rendered ineffective by the foolish posturing of the others in this group.

A human woman named Nichte and a male elf named Amolfein pressed us against my better judgement to force the slaves to return with us. The elf even made move to slay them to "put them out of their suffering". I informed him that if he attempted to massacre them, that I would slay him on the spot.

I also heard a clamor farther into the caverns, and suspect that one or more foolish scouts in our midst snuck past the guards to steal what little coin or goods these folk had.

I did witness a dwarf by name of Fenaris willfully attack and slay a guard of this poor group of desparate escaped slaves after the guard attacked me. This is a heinous act by my measure, and were he a member of my Clan he would surely be exiled or more likely, executed after having his beard shorn and stripped naked in shame.

The other two dwarves are not actually members of my Clan either, but both aspired to join our ranks. I can assure you that these allegations, if true, are horrifying and neither of them would be admitted into our Clan because of such acts. But I would caution that they likely fought to protect my sorely wounded person in hopes that I might be revived.

It is true that they took the bodies of these poor, butchered slaves back to the Duergar in Fort Mur to receive a bounty.

I know not who did what, but I will say that Fenaris should be exiled or executed for what I did see. I also think that the elf Amolfein is of poor character and should shoulder some blame as well. I believe that his desire to massacre my shield kinsman incited our group to respond with excessive violence when I was slain.

I'd also like to state for the record that Seeker Grey Jenkins heroicly returned my lifeless body and had the Grumbarites pray to Berronar to release my sould and return it here to this plane. I would have worried for my kin for all eternity, so it is good that I have returned to continue the Mother's work here in Sanctuary.
