While not altogether uncommon, a recent stoning in Upper tells a deeper story than the common cutpurse or brigand. An orc-blood by the name of ‘Zug’ was put to death for his part on an assault on members of the Watch after a recent duel. While conditions surrounding the crime remain understandably unannounced, the crimes on Zug’s part were enough to warrant execution after a short trial. Councilor Bhast, who oversaw the trial, stated that “Although such matters are never easy, the quantity and quality of evidence provided, both publicly and confidentially, proved beyond a doubt that the creature known as "Zug" was a clear menace to the town of Sanctuary.”The window presented by the orc’s death allows for a more in-depth look into life in Lower, however. In an environment in which strength, cunning, and a desire for personal freedom are paramount to survival, a large clan of orcs has flourished. The Red Claw brood, quick to pull any orc-blood its ranks, has achieved an impressive number, with some projecting their numbers into a few dozen. Faith in Gruumsh seems relatively common, and they have several potent shamans and warsingers devoted to him within their ranks. They are considered a danger by a number of the more powerful forces of Upper, and are generally escorted back to Lower or brought in for questioning if they venture too far into Upper.
