Levels

Is it just me or does anyone else think that people are leveling very fast on this server? Lets see, the server has bin public for about 2 weeks? and from what i see the average level is about 4-5, what is it going to be in another 2 weeks time?

You just think so. Those fellas in lvl 5 have mostly been there for some time already. If someone is higher, he is just active and has done alot of quests, DM quests and others to gain exp. It is because of the high DM activity, and good exp from those, since they usually are rather big and long ( some ).

Yeah, some of the characters have acutally been active for months. Also, I'm pretty sure the server is designed to move quickly to lvl 5 and then slow drastically after six. Makes a lot of sense to keep it that way.

I've been questing religiously (All in the name of beta testing, you understand) and I've had a damned hell load of trouble trying to get past level 5.

Anyone who is level 5 at this point has either been playing for a long time and is one of the "original" characters, or are unemployed and just sit at home playing all day.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Edit: (Hell yes. 150 posts gets me Underdark Adventurer. Ladocicea > U)

I've brought it up a few times to Howland, and he's given me the same response: Fast to level 5, slow after that.

It is completely true in my experience, and I think it's working out pretty dang good.

Oh i see, well, i guess thats not that bad, most people past lvl 5 iv noticed are the beta people.

Well, it's inevitable that people are going to be getting higher levels as time goes on. The underdark is so dangerous that people are dying off all the time though, so there'll always be a lower echelon of levels for people to quest with.

PanamaLane Yeah, some of the characters have acutally been active for months. Also, I'm pretty sure the server is designed to move quickly to lvl 5 and then slow drastically after six. Makes a lot of sense to keep it that way.

This is very much the case. Basically, level 4-5 is the "sweet spot" on the server. We've tried to make it very easy to get up to those levels. Once you hit that point, the fedex quests (which are free cash and xp) disappear, and you have substantially decreased xp on the lower level quests.

We've seen one person actually hit level 7, and that's someone playing an aweful lot, does very good at not dying, and who had the character throughout alpha. We've had very few actaully make it to 6, although with some of the xp formula tweaks, we are likely to see more.

Now, with that said, I think xp might be a little loose right now as we are trying to find the perfect numbers to put in our formulas. I'll be dialing things back slightly in the very near future for kill xp.

Speaking of which...

What's up with this random exp?

I've always been wondering why I get 9 exp for a Chosen one moment, and the next one I keep gives me 5, or something like that.

Is that an intentional feature of the exp formula?

Yep

Quite intentional. And the randomness extends in a lot of ways, so for instance there's never an optimal party make-up.

I think it goes at an excellent pace, slower than others i know, and ontop of that, being a druid, il die after i get a level up and have to be stuck on lvl 2 for a very long time so dont think it goes to fast! Maybe you have forgotten though that this PW isnt about lvling and such , its focused on Roleplaying and creating a plot to this...but everyone plays the way they wish.

I actually like the leveling pace a lot. I'm not level 5 yet and I realize a lot of the level 4 quests will dissapear for me, but I hope that I can learn to live with that when it happens.

I don't want to inadvertantly advertise for another server or anything, but I played on this one server where there was a rule you couldn't gain more than 1 level a month, but the system was designed in a way that you only recieved 1 experience point per kill, so to level in any reasonable amount of time you would have to be getting fed XP from DMs anyways. Needless to say one can only stand being level 1 for so long.

And of course I'm sure we're all familiar with servers that get you from level 1 to 5 within the first half hour, so that's an extreme that doesn't really need discussed.

I am quite content with the levelling system as well. The fact that most adventurers stick around level 4 to 5 really reflects how it should be, in my opinion. Those uncommon level 6, and that rare level 7's and 8's really make someone feel special, because it shows the time, dedication and love you put into your character. This way as well, no one will own a monopoly-power position, and everything remains balanced.

Hoorah.

It's great because this ensures the campaign setting retains its danger. If everyone could reach lvl 10 in a few days, the outskirts of Sanctuary would be somewhat a breeze to explore, unless the DMs boost up the levels of the mobs...

A little birdy told me there will eventually be level 20s.

I might be warping my memories just for the sake of entertaining the idea that someone could, one day, have an epic level character, but I think it was mentioned as 20 and above.

I doubt that very much. Although I'm sure someday there may be a case of someone bein very deserving of such a level I reckon the chances are very low. Even seeing a level 15 character seems like a slim chance to me

(edit typed this one a bit too fast.)
