Please be patient if this was already brought up or intentionally left out, but I've always liked the idea of having this. A poll a week in which characters who had played well the week before could be nominated for various reasons and voted on for a random DM quest/phat lewt/a bit of xp/name recognition/whatever has always seemed like a decent idea to me. The rewards certainly don't have to be anything substantial (I'd settle for a 'well done,' personally), but I've found that positive feedback is a great perk for RPing well (and for keeping the occasional amazing player who drops in to try the server out around if he's nominated).
Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

I like this idea. But I think it should be a 'character' not a player. We should send nominations to the DM's by mid-month with which characters we think have done an outstanding job (since we don't know all the player accounts behind the character) bringing color to themselves.
What I mean by color is that other characters/players are able to envsion that particular character vividly in their mind almost as if they are a real person....since that's what good RP really can accomplish.
The Dm's could publish the 'winner' on the website or in a post here with a few choice quotes from the recomendations. (maybe a picture if one is available also so otherplayers can recognize the character)
The only issue becomes if the character doesn't last a month on the server, but hey....some of the shortest characters are some of the most colorful.

Aye; nominate Characters for specific acts during the week, then have an open vote.

This idea is much like communism!
In theory, it's awesome. But when it gets carried out, it becomes corrupted, and completely counterproductive to the ideals it is trying to enforce.

I think it becomes a vanity contest and then begins to break down when people start voting for their friends, voting for themselves, etc etc etc >_>
Roleplay gets noticed and is probably handled well already.

Nah, because people's feelings get hurt when they don't get RPotW.

It moves from a content of awesome to a contest of lame/most flamboyantly annoying characters on the server.

I'm with the deputy. The idea is pleasant but in the end I fail to see the point. Why reward someone for something we should expect from all of us all the time, and strive for ourselves?
In addition, it runs the risk of becoming simply a popularity contest. It's impossible to experience every character on the server. Playing times are different, some characters do not mix together for valid IC reasons, and there are characters whose very nature is elusive. In addition, since roleplaying is collaborative, how can you seperate what is owed to which player? Think of Zau for example, a wonderfully played character simply for the reason that most of his characterization was reputation and hearsay. If you met Zau in person, you probably didn't live to tell anyone. The player deserves kudos, certainly, he's a great roleplayer, but everyone who ever whispered that drow's name and glanced around nervously added to his persona. And what would Ivandur have been like without Delgado dogging his efforts at every turn and vice versa?
I think a better idea, and a more entertaining reward would be for someone with time on their hands and a bit of writing talent to write short stories telling recently concluded plots so the rest of us could enjoy some of the stories being created everyday on EFU by all of our talented players.

I tend to agree with Inquisitor, and DeputyCool. I'm really against this sort of thing, or threads of similar nature.

While I like the idea of sending an email or something to the DMs if you think they are doing am awesome job, I don't want to see an RP contest. So, I'm against creating a RP reward system through OOC popularity. Send them a tell or something if you thought an event or situation was especially well handled. We are all here to RP and have fun, just keep it clean and everyone will be happy.

Works for me. I've never played at a mod that actually used it (excluding my two hours at COA), and I will say that it certainly does sound good in theory. I'm willing to believe those who say it isn't desirable based on past experience.

It was good at first on CoA, but it slowly degraded. Definately a no from me.

The problem being that those certain people who are always on, who create the characters who everyone knows, who are in IRC even when not online, who probably have the personal phone numbers of half the Dm crew, will tend to get nominated. Because they do a great job and EVERYONE knows who they are. And that's great. But there are some amazing roleplayers who you might only meet once, if at all, who don't do anything particularly fantastic, but just subtly enhance everything you do. Or the two of you have the most in-depth and fulfilling conversation that makes you cry in real life it was so moving, but only the two of you know about it and one vote won't win it...
Which kinda sucks.

This is a product of another server, and it has thankfully not migrated here.
EfU's player-recognition system is fine as it is.

Not needed, but I don't see the problem if you want to tell the community what a great time you had with so and so. No rewards of any sort, no voting, keep the dms out of it. I don't really like writing in the forums so I'd only take the time if I was really impressed with someone I've never met before.

I think it's a bad idea, for reasons already discussed.
When I encounter a player I think is particularly Awesome, I tell the closest available DM. Rumour has it they like to know where the latest crop of Awesome is growing.

EFU already have some sort of recognition system don't they? The curio shop! All the greats have their personal items sold there as well as themselves being forever remembered as a doll. So if you want to die and have your items sold for insane amounts of cash make sure you make a decent character that gets recognised!

I would argue that EfU has plenty of systems for recognition in place already, and while we can't be paying attention all the time, we try our best to reward players who are consistently played well and pushing plots with experience, plot advancement, quests, and loot. Any public voting system falls prey to issues like OOC popularity and public visibility of the character.
