This was given in the Hold before a crowd.
Although I did serve on the Council with Grigor Starag, I did not know him personally. In many ways, we were very different. Councilor Starag did not enjoy change. In fact, he often opposed it, when I felt it necessary, and at times our views clashed. However, there is one way I felt we were similar, and I have great respect for him because of that.
You see, I truly believe that Grigor Starag cared greatly about Sanctuary. It’s why he served the Council for so long, and why he has served us as a priest of Grumbar. And in this, his last great action for us, he has served us once again.
I believe that oftentimes change is necessary. We face a variety of threats, and must be prepared to renew ourselves to meet our foes. However, Grigor Starag’s sacrifice has reminded me that some principles are –Changeless-.
I think Starag wanted us to remember this. He wished for us to remember the unchanging principles upon which Sanctuary was originally founded.
The first one: Freedom! Freedom from those who would oppress us and enslave us! Freedom for our children, and their children! And freedom for those who still exist in slavery.
And the second founding principle which Starag has called our attention to: Hope. Hope for a better place than the underdark. Hope for a place where we are not pressed on every side by enemies. Hope, for the surface.
And so today, I ask that we all heed Starag’s call, and remember that though much may change around us, we can never lose sight of these timeless founding principles. I promise you that I won’t, and ask that you will remember them as well.
I thank you, Grigor Starag, for serving us even in death. May we all find the peace you have now.
