Fireside Chat: Maeturorant Gorthaurca for Council

Good Evening to you all, my fellow citizens. A few of you may know me, or have seen me about from time to time. My name is Maeturorant Gorthaurca, and I have decided to run for the council. Today I am sitting in a chair in front of the fire in the Rockbottom, and wondering what it is that you may wish to know about me. Today I shall tell you of my ideas concerning two things of note. I will write briefly my thoughts of the civil defense forces that protect us, and of our relations with the individuals that live in Lower Sanctuary.

The Watch I know you all are concerned with the state of the Watch, so am I. I believe that all current watch members not under investigation should put forth a vote concerning their choice of a new sheriff. The sheriff shall locate and appoint a new posistion within the Watch, known as the Investigator who shall follow up on all reports of wrongdoings within the Watch, that they shall never fall to corruption again. The Investigator shall be beholden only to the Sheriff, and the Sheriff shall be responsible for the conduct of their chosen Investigator. I would place my support of the position of Watch Sheriff behind Sergeant Moonfall, as she is a respected member of the Watch, and was the one to come forward about her organizations wrongdoings, nearly losing her life in pursuit of justice.

The Spellguard There has been a great deal of, as I understand it, misplaced animosity from our citizens directed towards the Spellguard. Do they protect us and conceal us from the magic of our enemies? I believe they do, to the best of their ability. I believe that though many groups know of our location within the Underdark, that we should still harken to their advice, for I believe that they have the safety of our settlement foremost in thought and deed. I have heard outcrys that the Spellguard hoard information and conduct their business in secrecy from the general population. Well citizens, I believe they do, and they should do no less. Matters of security should be known only to a few, such as the other defense organizations and the council. It has been proven time and again that our enemies walk within the very walls of Sanctuary, and for the Spellguard to be transparent in their doings would prove to be our downfall. Let us trust the men and women we place in our defense agencies.

The Seekers

Many call their members reckless and their goal futile. I have heard many say that they alert our enemies to our presence. This is utter nonsense. The Seekers are our best hope of leaving the Underdark. I have worked with, and spoken to, many of the members personally, and know them to be very intelligent, extremely capable individuals. Their goal can be realized. Their ability to gather information about our enemies and report on opportunities abroad while remaining undetected is unrivaled. Their efforts should be recognized and lauded. I would look for ways within the council to increase the funding that goes to this organization.

Lower Sanctuary The people in Lower Sanctuary wish to be their own entity. They have shown this time and again. They do not wish to be a part of Upper Sanctuary nor our protections. I say we respect their decision.

1. We should treat the leaders they appoint as representitives and accord them the same hospitality and dignity that we give our own councilors. We should work with these Lower Councilmen to establish a mutually beneficial arrangements, such as discussing the possibility of setting up embassies within each others borders. Let us not forget that it was men and women of Lower Sanctuary that brought stability and peace to Lower Sanctuary.

2. The temporary lift that is set up by Councilor Bhast should be turned into a small watch outpost, where we can screen who uses the lift and ensure that they are not criminals attempting to escape to Lower Sanctuary. If criminals assault us from Lower Sanctuary and we capture them outside Lower Sanctuary we shall try them here with our laws. Under no circumstances shall we pursue them into Lower Sanctuary. I would suggest that the Lower Council does likewise on their end.

It is in our best interest to aid in establishing a secure government for the people of Lower Sanctuary, and government that they want. It is unacceptable to continue to force ourselves on an unwilling population. That route can only lead to purposeless bloodshed, as we saw when our Agents and Watchmen attempted to arrest Johny Dimes.

Your Servant in Good Faith, Maeturorant Gorthaurca

Good Evening to you all, my fellow citizens.

My name is Maeturorant Gorthaurca, and I have decided to run for the council. Today I find myself sitting at a table in the Pissing Crone. It is often appropriate to come to the thick of things, so if you will humor me, I shall state my stance as plainly as I am able.

Maeturorant Gorthaurca Supports:

1. The Watch immediately voting in a new Sheriff. a. The Sheriff appointing an Internal Investigator to root our corruption within the ranks.

2. The secrecy of the Spellguard is necessary. a. Delicate information should be known to your representitives and your defense agencies until such time as deemed appropriate to inform the general populace. b. It is the duty of every citizen to collect evidence of suspected wrongdoings within any organization to immediately report their findings to the Council and the appropriate defence agencies. c. If called for, one representative from each of the three agencies will be the guest of their sister organization, in order to foster cooperation and ensure that we remain true to our duties.

3. There are routes to the surface, and the Seekers will find them. The more support we give them the sooner this will occur. a. Any route found will be frought with peril. Sanctuary will be a permanent home for many of us, which will always require defenders.

4. Respect the will of the people of Lower Sanctuary. Let them attempt to create their own township, government, and defense agencies and assist them as they allow us. a. Construction of a Watch post at the lift. No criminals may use it to escape our laws, we may control its operation in the event of hostile occupation of Lower Sanctuary occur. b. Lower Sanctuary and Upper Sanctuary consider placing embassies in each others territories.

Your Servant in Good Faith, Maeturorant Gorthaurca

Good Evening to you all, my fellow citizens.

My name is Maeturorant Gorthaurca, and I have decided to run for the council. As I warm myself near the fireplace of the Rockbottom Inn, I oftentimes find myself traveling back through my memory, to examine the choices that I have made. I have tried to live a good life, though I have had setbacks and failure. I believe myself to be a fair and just person. I will not make promises to you in order to garner votes. I will speak my mind, and attempt to act in the your best interests. I will make suggestions and I will listen to you. I believe that it is the qualities of the person that matter most. I value above all things honesty, integrity, compassion, and wisdom, and I model my life after these concepts. However, I feel compelled to speak to you of my greatest folly, that you may know me in my entirety. I think that is only fair. I will tell you the brief story of how I found myself within the walls of Sanctuary.

I was the first son of Ircathe Morothaten, of Evermeet. He is well respected and well thought of, dour and harsh though fair. I was groomed for a life at Court, to persue the path of a scholar and a wizard. I was taught many things of great worth at this time, as Evermeet is a bastion of learning, though I very much took these things for granted. I was dutiful and always strove to please, though in my heart I desired to travel from horizon to horizon, far from Evermeet and out of the shadow of my father. My only true joy was in looking after my sister, Canianalla, and my brother, Adaxedor, who were both wild and shared with me a powerful lust for life that I routinely was forced to deny. We shared many happy exploits and memories, and as they grew older I wished to comfort them in the knowledge of their destiny at court. I knew it would pain them greatly to suffer confinement and to pass through the ages as a bird born caged. As a bearer of this burden myself, I am ashamed to admit, I took great comfort in the belief that we would endure this fate hand in hand. I should have requested from my father to take the journey we all yearned for. We could have traveled until the thought of going home was welcome. Instead I quarrelled with my brother and sister over their desires to leave. I became overbearing and critical, impossible to stand. We were very near to hating each other. I recognize now it was my destiny I hated, and the false way of life I had adopted. I was furious with myself but could not admit it. I was selfish and scared of being left behind, and too prideful to speak to them rationally. As they rebelled more and more, I became more like my father. I grew to despise anything to do with life or events outside of Evermeet.

When they disappeared it pained me greatly. My father did not plan on sending me to find them, but my wrath was too much for him to deny. I did not recognize the look in his eyes when I stormed out of his house. I know now what sorrow and regret are.

It was six years later that I found them. They were battling the drow in Cormanthor. I stated that they were coming home, and if they felt they could not do so that I would carry them. My sister would not speak to me and stood next to a human male I recognized as being one of those rare sorts allowed to visit Evermeet. My brother informed me that my sister was married to him and carried his child. He told me that it was Corellon's will that they were living as they desired and that I would never know what that meant. I was riding away with his words in my heart and tears in my eyes when I heard the sound of battle. I still hear those horns today, calling the retreat. I was captured and lived on while they died. My last memory of them is of wolves tearing their bodies to pieces. I spent my second six years away from Evermeet with the drow in Traensyr, and many were the nights, and long, that I replayed all these events in my mind, seeing what I did not see before. I spent what time I could doing small things of kindness to others around me.

I was feverish and dying slowly in a filthy hole when a Seeker happened upon me. He asked if I could stand, and I said I could not. He then told me he would carry me back home. I do not remember his name, but his hair was the same color as the man my sister had wed.

I have tried to rectify my mistakes. I am aware that though I have tried to live life well, that I am flawed. I am honest, fair and reasonable. I will listen to your needs and I have the courage to enact your will. I will serve faithfully as your trusted servant. Thank you for your interest, and may you look inside yourself, and choose with wisdom.

My Sincerest and Highest Regards, Maeturorant Gorthaurca
