With the new tool, they are able to turn on with the ring, but there is no way to cancel it. I've tried both removing the ring and reactivating, but they are still on.

Ah. Seems death and resting removes the effects as well.

Fixed in v798. The effect should go away if you remove the ring. It should not go away when resting.

Death may still remove the effect. That's not a big issue, though.
