The Diary of Lance Lathain

[The script within the diary is exceptionally neat and precise. Each stroke of the quill has been thought about exactly; it is written in Common. It details both his previous history, and that which has come to pass since his fall into Darkness.]

Entry 1;

I have purchased, from a street vendor in Baldur’s Gate, this new Diary. With the death of my late master; Haldurn Gilstoke, I have decided it is in my best interests to start afresh. I have inherited the tower that was once my Master’s along with the rest of his possessions, various magic items, keys, and Glyphs that no doubt open passages and rooms that as his Apprentice I was not to know about.

I have changed my name from Nathan Liathan to my favoured Business alias, Lance Lathain. My Master’s untimely death couldn’t have come at a better time; I have his wretched Brother, Robert, to thank for such. Perhaps I will send him a bouquet of flowers, and my regards…

Entry 2;

Exploration. I have decided to take the time to explore the many parts of the Tower to which I was never granted access; this should prove exceptionally interesting.

I’ve managed to uncover a multitude of new libraries, I never knew any of these existed and I know not how they can exist... unless they do so in an extra dimensional space… I will investigate further at a later date. For now I’ll detail the rest of my findings. Which include several summoning chambers, which seem to be warded from the prying eyes of outsiders. I will no doubt have use for these, again, at a later date.

Entry 3;

I have uncovered something exceptionally interesting… Upon reading one of the many tomes my Master gathered either from his travels, or otherwise, I have come across the rumoured existence of an interesting Artifact. Several books I have read reference it with varied names, however, the description of the power of the item stays the same. One tome reads: “The Goblet of Blood is an item of the most awesome power. Within the Goblet rests the water containing the essence of Bhaal, god of Murder. In the Time of Troubles, when his blood spilled from him and into the water, an innocent child took from the freshly tainted river a cupful of the unholy water, and with it the essence of a God most foul. It is said, across the Realms, that any who dare drink from this Goblet take within themselves the seed of Murder and with this seed they would ascend to Godhood in the place of Bhaal.” – I was intrigued to find whether this Goblet is more than just a rumour, and thus I travelled to Candlekeep to spend time reading their library, and I found reference to such an Artifact under many names; The Jar of Death, The Vial of Ascension, The Cup of Murder. With this information I hope to use one of my late master’s summoning circles and call forth a denizen of the Planes.

Entry 4;

The circle is drawn, and the summoned will soon be within my power to grasp. I have decided I will summon two beings. This time will be a being of the Heavens, and I will say my reason for binding it is so I can destroy this item…

[From here, until the latest entry, the journal is a confused mess. Scraps of parchment shoved in all over. On many curses are written, cursing “the bastard Heavens”.. “the whorish angels.” Etc. Abruptly as it began, the wild ramblings stopped and order seems to be restored to the journal.]

    I have not written for some time, I could not bare looking into my past. Much has been gained, much has been lost. I find myself wishing safety on citizens I had never known before. Citizens that spit and curse my name and the name of my honourable Order; The Spellguard. Despite their foolish rumours and beliefs, I protect them still - I find myself asking why, and there is one simple answer - In this, I have purpose.
