Add damage reduction -5 to the weapons with a "no damage" property. It stops dashing out your crazy strength bonus. Perhaps some people will get over it anyway (like Vruuk, prehaps..) but it will stop waving a "practice" sword around and doing 7 damage.
I think it would make sparring something more common!

I agree. I've role-played "training combat" several times with Melrick, and I would have done it more often if it didn't require the use of healing items after the fact.

Someone with improved power attack can still shove that practice sword in a painful place.
-15 damage would cover that as well :)

I just think sparring should be more common than it is at present.
With a non-damage sword/weapon type you could arrange fun events without spending half your gold on healing.

If someone is power attacking with a Sparing weapon. It should do some damage. But, a -7 would cover even a 20 strengthed greatsword.
then again, maybe the strength should hurt, and you work around that. Though for Rp's sake it *would* be more productive to neutralize all basic strength.

Perhaps get rid of any mechanical damage and tack on one blunt damage to simulate that 'holy crap, you just hit me in the face with a wooden sword!' feel?

Speaking of wooden swords, how about the ones sold in lower all be coloured to "copper/bronze/brown" so they all look like they are made of wood.
I know this is the color of sewer town rusty weapons, but maybe they could find a cheap brass supply down there and start making gold weapons in sewer town :)
Steel is for the standard weapons,
Black for adamantite, cold iron etc.
Gold for brass, highly enchanted weapons.
Copper for practice weapons.
