[A sealed letter sent to the Council]

Councilors of Sanctuary,

Concerning the plague that has swept through Sanctuary, I have identified the cause of it, the group responsible for spreading it, and have rectified both problems to the best of my abilities. This is my report on the events that occured today.

I first became involved in the plague problem when I and a group of Hoarrans were afflicted by the plague and decided to find its source. The Hoarrans had information that the cult of Moander’s headquarters was located in the Badlands, so we acted upon that information and found the cult’s temple, which was located through a trapdoor. The place was guarded by a number of extremely powerful golems. After some time, we defeated them, only to find the gate to the cult's fortress locked.

We returned to Sanctuary's outskirts, with the disease still ravaging our bodies, to find a man flanked by two of these same golems and a gnomish wizard, claiming that if we 'praised Moander' he would provide the cure to the plague. As we had reason to believe that the Cult of Moander was behind the spread of the plague, that was unacceptable, so we demanded the cure. The man refused to provide it, so we attacked him, and killed him, and the gnomish wizard. On the gnome's body, I found a holy symbol of Moander that could apparently spread the same disease that was making its way through Sanctuary. After finding this, the golems that were flanking the man attempted to assault the city, and our group, with the Sanctuary Watch, subdued them.

After this, rumors of another cure for the plague began to emerge. I decided to investigate these rumors, as the last time that a plague had been offered, the cultists behind the plague had been offering the cure. The source of these rumors was in Lower Sanctuary, in the northern portion. A lizardfolk had apparently ‘come across’ many bottles of the same elixir that the cult of Moander was giving out. When I pressed him about where he’d obtained the cure, the Lizard began getting extremely hostile and nervous. He kept saying ‘a man in a cave’, and I demanded that he turn over the cure to me so that it could be dispersed amongst the citizens. He refused, turned invisible, and ran.

After all of this, I spoke with Kor’us, of the Seeker Organization. We proceeded try and come up with a strategy to stop the plague, and thought of a way to overcome the obstacle that had prevented me from penetrating the cult of Moander’s temple initially. We decided to bring a ladder to overcome the gate that had locked us out of the temple. When we arrived back at the Temple, we were ambushed by group of Lizardfolk assassins, who were extremely capable. These lizardfolk, as we fought them, chanted ‘glory to the Synod’. We defeated them, and a few more golems. We made our way past the obstacle that had blocked our passage the first time using the ladder that Kor’us provided, and came upon a woman guarding the entrance to the Temple.

She insisted that the cult of Moander wasn’t responsible, and that they had no part in it, but when I told her about how the symbol of Moander would cause people to become afflicted by the same plague, she stopped answering questions. I informed her she could leave, or perish, and she turned invisible and ran. This all took place at the gateway to the temple, and as the girl turned invisible, I saw that there was a very large and powerful golem behind her. Long story short, after a long and taxing fight, leading to many of my companions’ deaths, we defeated the golem, and made our way into the temple itself.

Those within had fled. From the reports I’d received earlier, the prophet ‘Ghamm’ was leading them, and so he must have fled. The place looked as though things had been cleaned up hastily. In the center of the temple there was a strange green portal, and after thoroughly investigating the place, we went through the portal. On the other side, we found ourselves in an area that looked like Dunwarren, covered in dead bodies. The bodies had maggots coming off of them in hordes, and they were filtering through a strange system. We decided that this must be how the cult was spreading the disease throughout Sanctuary, so we burned the bodies that were down there. After we were done cleansing the place, there were no more bodies or maggots down there.

I’ve made a few conclusions after all of these events:

  • The cult of Moander, without a doubt, was responsible for the plague that has recently swept through Sanctuary. They were obviously manufacturing a disease when I raided their temple.

  • The lizardfolk’s presence was not a coincidence, and these attacks may be linked to the disease in their city, or the disease in their city may even be linked to the cult of Moander. This is a connection that should be investigated thoroughly.

  • The cultists of Moander escaped, and though I doubt there are many of them left, as they fled my extremely small group of mercenaries, they still have their ‘prophet’, a man named Ghamm, who has been seen within the Pissing Crone.

  • The plague will no longer be spreading through the way it was initially spread, even though it will spread through human contact.

  • We can stop this illness by spreading the cure, once it has been produced in larger amounts. From the information I’ve gathered, the Spellguard and the Society are working to produce more of this cure.
