System Message When Changing Subdual Modes

This was recently brought up in IRC where I was made aware that new characters by default are on subdual mode. However, no matter which damage mode you're on, the message displayed when changing is always "[Subdual] Switched to <Damage> Mode."

Combine that with my not knowing that subdual mode kills NPCs (I'm a noob, don't look at me like that), meaning I've walked around on FD mode for four months, and it means I've been caused a lot of OOC frustration by this.

If at all possible, would it be an idea to make the system check which damage mode you're on when changing, and notifying you if you're changing to a mode you're already using (like, "[Subdual] You're already on <Damage> Mode.")?

[Le'bump!]

I'm not sure what the problem you've experienced is.

Every damage mode kills NPCs. The modes are for PVP use only.

There's no actual problem but I'll try and explain my concern.

Very early with my previous character I was involved in a situation that required me to be on subdual mode. Not knowing you start out on that mode by default, I typed the command for subdual damage mode and got the "Switched to..." message. When the situation changed I switched to full death, thinking that was where I came from. I continued like that till only very recently.

Now, dying can be annoying--dying to a mistake doubly so; but dying to an OOC misunderstanding, that's just mood breaking. And accidents do happen.

... did that make sense?

I think Snoteye gets confused when he tries to switch between different combat modes. Unless I'm mistaken he is asking that when you switch into the damage mode your already in, that it should tell you that you were already in that mode.

When it says "Switched to... whatever", it leads one to believe that they were not in that mode previously. Which he thinks leads to confusion later on. Like the next time they log in, or if they didnt know what mode they are on while beating on someone.... I think.

(sorry if I got this wrong, its what I gathered out of it)

That's pretty much it.

Using "subdual" as the phrase might be what's confusing, then? Maybe change the command to "Damage". So it's /c damage subdual, or /c damage full.

I'm still sort of foggy on how it's caused you grief, though!

I would love that change Metro. Typing in subdual Subdual anyhow confused me the first time.

Just so we are clear though, snoteye was refering to the server message you get in response to the command, rather then the actual command itself.

No, what bugs me is the system message you get when you type in either of the subdual commands. All of the messages in the screenshot are triggered by the same command (except from where it changes to FD and sparring)--all of them says "switched to..." is if I wasn't already on that mode. When I used this the first time I simply assumed I went from FD to subdual, which is why I always changed back to FD.

I suspect having FD'ed at least one person because of this, and more than a couple of times have I been close enough, because I wasn't totally aware of how the system worked. It's not really that great a feeling. :?

Snoteye, I'd hate to mention it... but all you'd have to do is Not turn it back to FD mode.

Ebok Snoteye, I'd hate to mention it... but all you'd have to do is Not turn it back to FD mode.
But why would I not go back to FD when I thought that's where I came from? I'll be the first to admit that I don't read the rules journal entries, both because I don't like reading IG, but also because I expect everything in there to be posted on the forums somewhere; and as I have absolutely no recollection of seeing this mentioned anywhere, how was I supposed to know NPCs aren't affected by subdual modes? >.<
