Poll. PvP.

When is it acceptable to run away or surrender in a fight?

Depends on what kind of a character you are playing. Fanatical Banite Tyrant? Cowardly rogue?! This question has way too many variables that could be applied to it for me to answer it.

It does have a very wide range of vairibles but the question still stands. your character vs john doe does your character fight a losing battle to die or would he surrender, if your character is fighting on the winning side of the battle do you stop at near death to let them live or just flat out kill them.

It's as acceptable to surrender at any given time in a fight as it is to not surrender at all. This is pretty much the closest you can get to an answer for the reason pointed out by wcsherry.

However, if you're asking if, and when, our own characters would turn tail in a given fight, well... that's really something to be found out IG.

I didn't vote because none of the options really suited me. It depends on the character I am playing. Melrick, for example, is not likely to engage in a battle unless he is certain he is going to come out victorious. He isn't cowardly. He is just smart and is not going to throw his life away like a fool.

He does what he can to avoid direct combat, and would rather do battle through others than have to face them directly. Again, he doesn't do it because he's a coward, but because it suits his goals best.

He's very end goals oriented. If he was forced into battle unexpectedly, and he thinks he'll lose, he'll do anything he can to swing things in his favor.

As for allowing others to surrender? If Melrick has a reason to kill you, and he is actually standing over you - preparing to do it - there is little hope that he'll accept it. He might muse it over for a bit while he beats you for his amusement, as he listens to you beg for your life. He is very reluctant to show any form of mercy, because to him it is a weakness that often comes back to haunt you in the end.

When is it okay to run away or surrender: At ANY given time!

But if your opponent is reluctant to let you get away, you may lose your life anyway. We can't put the pvp (and the rp) on hold because someone is not injured enough to surrender / or because chararcter A said "I surrender" at badly wounded and character B just continued to pound away at him (How dare he?!1).

Emulating a grim reality in which consequences depend on the actions of free-thinking individuals, we should not, cannot limit combat by setting OOC rules for what happens if someone, IC, cries "I surrender".

oh i wasnt trying to -set- anything i was mearly curious to what other had to say on the topic.

This poll is incomplete, so I won't be voting. Obviously, you've not given an option for "Never" so anything else would be a lie.

As mentioned before it depends on your character, although if your badly wounded and your enemy is barely injured, its obvious somethings not going your way.being outnumbered by skilled enemies would make any warrior lose his nerve and make a run for it unless he/she builds up an insane amount of courage or is honour bound to fight to the death so really I dont think it matters on your state of health

I'm lost. Do you mean, on a quest?

I'm particularly partial to fanatical Paladins of Helm and Warrior Clerics of Garagos that simply don't know the meaning of retreat.

I always enjoy playing a Barbarian of Garagos that would turn on his own allies if they showed any hesitancy in continually charging every enemy in sight, let alone run away.

I'd love to see more people take a crazy, zealous, uncompromising interpretation of their dogma. Helmites, Banites etc. can all be brilliantly stubborn and heroic in battle.

Not to say anyone that runs at the first sign of trouble is a bad RPer, but it definitely shows dedication to maintaining the integrity of your character if you are going for the "Never" option!

I agree with what most folks have said about giving in or running away (or not, even if it means death) being considered on a character-by-character basis.

Please note, while running away ICly and hiding somewhere on the server is totally cool, logging to avoid a confrontation really isn't. I can't think of a player who would not be right ticked if that happened during PvP.

If you crash, let your opponent know as soon as you can.

Hrothgar Skret used to beat down or withold loot from those who fled in combat.

I'm going to 2nd "never."

Don't be a sissy.

Naughty's a liar. He's more of an uninjured guy.

Nuclear Catastrophe I'm lost. Do you mean, on a quest?

I believe it's PvP, since that's the name of the thread. ;)

I didn't vote, since it comes down to so many variables, the given situation, your character and so on. But I've never surrendered in a PvP. Maybe I would if I played a cowardly mage, and the half-orc brute had beaten me to Badly Wounded, I were out of spells, and he was unharmed.

Nah, not even then.

I think a good PvP battle is the best (unless you reach the surface!) way to end a character. Accordingly, in most cases I'll stick around and duke it out, unless the battle itself or the reason for it is dodgy.

And yes, stop being pussies.

It depends on your char's personality, if they are a complete coward they would probly run as soon as they get hit so about barly injured if they are a barbarian in rage id say if they were gunna run badly injured-near death.

If that isnt a answer use your imagination or dont run; win.
