What are the rules of swearing on EfU?

It's allowed, but excessive swearing is poor taste.
Also, using modern expletives can look out of place. It's better if you just say something more setting specific. Like Drow lover! Something less unimaginative, of course, but you get the idea.
Some characters were using the F-word far in excess of what would be appropriate (twice a sentence practically), so we asked the playerbase to slow down. It's not like you're going to be banned for it, but we suggest there are better, more setting appropriate words.
okay - so the f-word is allowed but not to be over used. i assume the work 'fark' is ok.
when people were using the f-word way too much - was this everytime they went to say something or just when they angry at someone or somthing? or are niether of these acceptable?
Try to avoid using the word "fuck" if you can.
I remember there was a particular guard that had a mouth worse than an older eddie murphy movie.
You could always use substitution.. like a hated deity (though thats risky).
I dont give a CYRIC! What the CYRIC do you think you're doing?
Some players have been kind enough to post lists of alternative and more setting apropriate terms. Do a search, I'm sure you'll find them
ok - thanks guys. that s helped.
"Lloth dammit!" A favorite of my drow char (not in EFU)
I dont say the F word just Fark
example
"I told you to jump in the river and fark yourself." or
"you farking drow"
Perhaps this is just a personal thing, but I find using "fark" as a replacement for the actual word 100% of the time to be basically the same as explicitly saying it. I read and interpret it the same as "fu.ck" and "f-ck". Characters (and the players that play them) end up on a completely different level of magnitude when they can continually find better insults and derogatory remarks that do not need to utilitize any form of the work 'fuck'.
I feel wrong writing this, because I admit that word frequents itself in my personal vocabulary when I'm speaking in appropriate settings.
Why not just make your own trademark words? You really don't need to say "FUCKITY FUCK FUCK MOTHER FUCKERS DROW FUCKER HALFLING FUCKER, EAR MUFFS EAR MUFFS EAR MUFFS!" to get a point across.
My character has his own insulting words, which I ripped off an excellent series of books, and it's spread to more people than just him using it.
Bah, people were saying craven before Mormont came on the scene.
Who was? Europeans and Aussies dont count >.>
i guess part of the reason is because we all understand the word 'fuck' and other words in our own language and its just easy to usse them IG because other people understand them. sometimes when other people say other cuss word (more appropriate to the atmosphere) I think I sometime fail to understand how harsh some of them are meant to be or mean.
Inquisitor Who was? Europeans and Aussies dont count >.>
Dungal.
You can use them, but DON'T BASE A GOD DAMN CHARACTER ON IT. "Bloody hell" is a fair one in my opinion, because it fits the setting and Americans don't use it very often so it still has an "Olde-World" feel to it, but if we specifically allowed it, we'd have effing and blinding characters everywhere, simply because of the following indisputable fact : Human beings are cranky, and sometimes extremely uncreative with their language. Exercise your literary muscles.
OroborousInquisitor Who was? Europeans and Aussies dont count >.>Dungal.
I see Dungal even less than the Europeans and Aussies, and he's never used it when I have seen it!
I lay claim.
Your claim is null and void.
It belongs to the citizens of The People's Republic of New Cravenia.
Bah! I'm pretty sure Rilo used it at least once, right before getting his scrawny arse handed to him in a duel. :)
personally I use the word 'rothe' in place of 'fuck'
"Don't rothe it up!"
"You rothing bastard!"
"I don't give a rothe!!"
It's not as harsh, perhaps, as something someone else might use, but it's at least setting appropriate.
I've also taken a page from Hordes of the Underdark where that demon in that frozen hell plane uses the phrase 'Pike off' a lot, so I've used that also.
Hmm...here are some of Cronus' signature sayings. (Although he does use "Fark" often too)
"Vergadain's balls!" = "Holy shit" or "What the hell?" or "Jesus!" "Vergadain's hairy balls!" = A strenuous variation.
"Ye're a <insert disliked god>-kissed son of a <insert desired beast>!" Example: "Ye're a Mask-kissed son of an Otyugh!"
"Ye're a poor excuse fer a crab's anus!" = You are useless, worthless, etc.
"You could'na pour piss outta yer boot iffun the instructions were on the heel!" = You're an idiot
maybe I'm just old fashion... but "Vergadain's hairy balls!" strikes me as more crude than "fuck"
then again I have no problem with swearing, unless it's used for the sake of using it.
i agree with that. the word "fuck" has lost all meaning as profanity in my book
I'm going to go against the trend here, and disagree.
'Fuck' is a great word, and it can be used effectively. I've seen plenty of people who have used it to good effect, adding layers to their character, rather than shaving them off. It doesn't necessarily mean you're lazy or not fond of flexing your literary muscles. Sometimes it just fits the character. And the word has been around since language itself, in one form or another. There is always an expletive which is more frowned upon than others.
However, I also agree that it can be overused, which is definetely detrimental.
Once again, it's the few spoiling it for the many. It's always the rule. Things are fine without it, but I always get a little tear in my eye when I view logs from the period when it was still acceptable.
That's just because you're the bastard son of a poxy dock-side whore.
Clash of cultures.
I'll explain. Profanity has different levels wherever you go in the world. Sexual swearwords, for example, are pretty commonly used (so I've been told) in the US, while they will stop a room dead in the UK. Conversly, blasphemy is reasonably serious in the US, while as far back as the Napoleonic wars, the British troops were known as 'goddams' for their liberal way of taking the Lord's name, various parts of his anatomy and personal history in vain.
Now, how comfortable and relaxed would people be if they had people constantly blaspheming against -their- personal religion? Of course, it doesn't happen in EfU, because we all blaspheme against the various dieties.
Another quick point - sexual swearwords tend to have power only in societies in which there's a sense that it's 'not talked about' - sex not being openly discussed. In the FR, I'm afraid, this just isn't true. Blasphemy, on the other hand, is open and a real issue, as there's perhaps not in in a hundred people who isn't a firm, devoted follower of the Pantheons as a whole.

Wow that's for sure. You get used to it living here I guess. Hey what FR anyway?
Bane's Balls. Elfson (for half orcs). Goblinspit. Crapbucket.
(No, Verg's balls doesn't sound any better.)

any way very true point on it all depending on where your from :) the end result is that it all comes down to seperating IC from life and where one line ends and another line begins. but yeah its great to see more creativity to a charactor and true sometimes some words suit a charactor more than others all depends on the charactor
