Yes the time has finally come. I will be heading out to compete in a small Brazillian Jiu Jitsu competition tomorrow (hopefully in preperation for Grapplers Quest). Assuming my arms and neck are in working order afterwards I will post how it went. Prayers, well wishers, smart ass comments are all appreciated. -dholt5

Good luck bro. I know how tourneys go. Just enjoy and try to keep in one piece.
Yay, dholt!
Awesome, good luck.
TKD black belt here, but I've been working on teaching myself some bjj the last half-year.... good stuff.
Since when have you been a ninja in training! This sounds pretty terrific. Best wishes to you dholt. :)
Martial arts is great, black belt in Ju jitsu here and going for my black in Kobudo (weapons training for those lesser people)
OMO PLATA ROLL FTW
Your kung fu is weak. I hope you Jiu Jitsu is better.
Love, thesuit
Well for my first competition it went ok. I took second in my weight division for white belt. (For those who know Jiu Jitsu the guy who beat me won based on points for a guard pass after a failed triangle attempt. For the Absolute (all white belts no weight divisions) I beat my first guy fairly easily (arm bar from mount, he stacked me but I had his arm at full extension causing him to scream and ending the match  ). Second match was against the same guy who took first in my weight division. Lost the same way to him (he ended up taking absolute for white belts with another guy from his gym). All in all it was a good first tournament. Note to self, stop being lazy and drop down the next weight class wich I should be in any way :). -dholt5
What weight did you fight at, Dholt?
Also, sounds like you did pretty damned well!
I am at 190 right now. (Cut off was 194 with Gi on). I should be at 170 - 180 weight class with gi off. For a first competition it went allright, I just need to relax and not waste all my energy right away. -dholt5
Dholt gassed!
Metro_Pack Dholt gassed!
Just like *spoiler* last night, eh?
....I was planning to watch that after work. Thanks.
Hey, that's nothing. The biggest surprise of all last night was when- ...heh, just a joke....
Sorry though, my apologies.
Congrats Dholt. I'm just happy that you walked away with no broken bones.
Thanks Hook! It was kind of wierd actually. Most of the people there did not go after submissions (at the white belt level). They would wait for the other guy to go for something then try pass and hold the position winning on points (it did work for a lot of them). My instructor doesnt like that strategy because it stops working at the blue and especially the purple belt levels.
Metro: Hell yes I gassed. For my first match I jumped the guard and won based on six advantages and one sweep (that was more the other guy being dead than anything at the end of the match). For those that dont know the BJJ scoring system an adantage is an attack that doesnt submit your opponent but forces them to defend. Six arm bar attempts from guard lol. Towards the end my instructor was screaming 'Just hold the guard you are up x nothing!!!!!!'. Oh well, live and learn :D . -dholt5
Congratulations with your debut!
A few pieces of advice:
1. Practice, practice, practice. When you are tired of practicing, don't stop. That special feeling will be back sooner or later, and if you've been away, you will find yourself out of shape. 2. Participate in as many competitions as possible. You will learn infinite times more by 10 minutes on the mat, then 10 hours in the dojo. Don't be afraid of your opponent, but don't underestimate him either. 3. Warm up. 4. Video reviewing. When I fight, I focus so much on the moment, that I've forgotten all about the match when the match is over. Plus, you don't notice all your mistakes when you fight. 5. The psyché is extremly important. Know that you are ready, and never give up, no matter how far behind you are. The best defence is an attack.

What do you fight, Hybris?
Metro_Pack What do you fight, Hybris?
Ashihara Karate. It's a modern style, similar to Kyokushinkai Karate. It's inspired by many different martial arts, such as traditional karate, boxing, judo and ju-jitsu. The essence of Ashihara Karate (IMO), is that we practice full contact/knockdown.
How tall are you dholt? I'm asking because you say you competed at 190 but are now cutting. Just curious!
When ever I fight at tournaments there are very few in my division. There arent a lot of big fellas in Kung fu. If I was 190 I would be skin and bones :D
r u ok? No broken bones? y doesnt my backspace work properly >.<?
Btw da guys next 2 me r tellin me 2 say "cheese" so cheese :D .
Wat belt r u, man, blk? I was a greener or sumthin 3 years ago but i broke my anus in sparring, i got beat by some1 a year younger then me at the time (i was 12 he was 10-11)
Who do you train under dholt? And what legacy of BJJ is your teacher from?
