thrown weapons vs. ammunition

Maybe this cannot be changed, but I find it a little confusing...

99 {bolts, arrows, sling stones} weigh 0 lbs 100 darts weigh 10 lbs

I know that some other thrown weapons also have weight, but am not sure how much they weigh. Why is it that you can carry lots of extra ammunition (indeed, _hundreds_ of extra arrows) without affecting encumberance, and not do the same with thrown weapons?

Because my character is not super strong, I find myself buying only 10 lbs of darts at a time, and needing to remember to check my supply before each quest.

This makes sense IC, but... Not trying to complain - just expressing confusion.

Whether you realize it or not, DnD darts are far bigger than darts you throw at your local pub. Arrows, on the other hand, are quite light but fired with a great deal more force. So unless your char learns to use a bow or crossbow(which I believe everyone does--crossbow I mean) you'll have to deal with your choice of weapons.

I understand that the darts are likely not as light as modern darts - and it seems to be believable that 50 darts could weigh 5 pounds (I'm not being picky about how accurate/realistic the number is).

Here's what I don't understand: The makers of NWN chose to make ammunition weightless, presumably so that even low-strength PCs could stock up and have no fear of running out in combat.

I'm just not sure why thrown weapons weren't not treated similarly. I'm not sure that it makes sense to say that 10 darts weigh a pound and 10 arrows weigh 0 pounds. 10 arrows should also likely weigh somewhere between 0.5 and 1 pound as well, right?

I don't like the weight of darts, to be honest. it makes them far less feasible over a sling, which has a net weight of 2lbs including ammunition. The only real advantage of darts is they don't have their Enhancement split across ammunition and weapon when made magical, but thats not really much of a bonus.

Darts can be a bit pointless.

agreed. the only time i use darts is when i do not wish to kill my prey

Darts can be extremely effective, on certain characters.

Mechanically I see them no more effective than a sling.

Sure mads but that character needs to be specifically made to use them. In the generic vanilla one vs the other they dont really stack up (pun intended). A improved fire rate would go a long way to equalising them. Shuriken are an exotic weapon to boot and are less damage than darts are!!! I dont know what the reasoning there was but I guess they're just following source material however off the mark it is.

I know some things are supposed to suck, just to make some other stuff look good though :D

A mighty sling maybe. My character always carries tons of throwing axes (although I must say those ARE very weighty for what you get) but the thing is darts allow your strength mod to the damage you deal and the same goes for throwing axes. Sling does not.
